Institut Perguruan Bahasa Melayu Malaysia is a university institute which became a center of educational language, literature and culture of the Malays. The Institute is located in the Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur and is adjacent to the University of Malaya and University Institute of International Languages.

The Institute was established as the Institute of Languages on January 12, 1956 on the recommendation of the Razak Report an institute founded in 1956 in order to raise the standard of Bahasa Melayu. At first, the institute is based in the Ministry of Education, Federal House, Kuala Lumpur. The initial activities of the institute is focused on administrative activities such as student recruitment and preparation of teachers and other staff who work here.

However, in November 1957, the Institute has acquired its own building in Bukit Smile, Johor Bahru while waiting for permanent buildings completed in Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur. The main function of the Language Institute at that time was to train special teachers of language teaching, especially in the national language.
