Institut Kemahiran MARA - IKM

Institut Kemahiran MARA - IKM is an government initiative to fulfill the needs in upgrading in academic and especially skills knowledge among the youth of rural areas. To realise the government's intention, MARA has established Sekolah Latehan Kemahiran MARA (MARA Skills Training School), in Jalan Hang Tuah, Bandar Melaka, Melaka, Malaysia. The location now served as Kolej Profesional MARA, (MARA Professional College). It is the first Sekolah Latehan Kemahiran MARA in Malaysia. It was officially opened in October 1968 by the second Prime Minister of Malaysia (at that time) - Tun Haji Abdul Razak.

Sekolah Latehan Kemahiran MARA at that time only administered by 1 Principal, 8 teachers and 3 administrative staff. Courses conducted are only two courses; Kajisawat Motor and Mechanical. Each of these disciplines has basic training called 'Common Module' is broken down into several modules such as Welding, Machining, 'Mengegas' and Technical Drawing.

In 1972, new courses have been held, Machinery Drawing, and courses followed in 1975, Automotive bodyworks & Paint. As the demand of skilled workers increased from time to time and growing field of expertise, hence students enrolled in skills training also increases. MARA Skills Training School in Bandar Melaka could not accommodate the increasing of students who wish to pursue skills. The limited area of the school made the higher level MARA administrative, moved the school into a wider area in the town Jasin, Melaka in January 1984.

Later, in accordance with the current recognition, the school, Sekolah Latehan Kemahiran MARA was then upgraded and was renamed to Institut Kemahiran MARA - IKM (MARA Skills Institute). Until today, MARA has more than 20 campus of IKM including their Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi MARA - KKTM.
